HCMC’s Tan Son Nhat Airport revisions approved

Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport has approved changes to the expansion plan for HCMC’s Tan Son Nhat Airport. The plan includes a 250-hectare expansion of the airport, and a third terminal as well as expanded aircraft parking and maintenance areas.

Currently, Tan Son Nhat airport covers 545 hectares of area and this will be expanded to 791 hectares. Land acquisition includes 171 hectares of space that is located to the north of the airport, 35 hectares to the south, 19 hectares managed by the defense ministry and 18 hectares that are jointly managed by the civil aviation authorities and defense.

Under the new plan, Terminals 1 and 2 will be expanded and a new Terminal 3 will be built in the new southern section of the airport. With all three terminals in operation, authorities project that the airport will be able to handle 50 million passengers per year.

The new Terminal 3 area will include an aircraft parking lot in front of it that will accommodate 56 aircraft. Another 50 aircraft parking spaces are in the Terminal 1 and 2 areas so the expanded airport will be able to park 106 aircraft in total.

The airfield taxiways and runways will also under revision. The current runways will remain unchanged but five exit taxiways and three parallel taxiways will be added to provide greater connectivity between runways and terminals, which will speed up the time that aircraft are on the ground.

The investment and construction roadmap for the airports expansion places priority on the construction of Terminal 3, along with supporting infrastructure including roads and parking lots to the south of the current airport. The work on these components has been authorized to start immediately. In the northern areas of the airport, the priority has been placed on developing water reservoirs and pumping stating that will eliminate airport flooding.

The development and expansion of roads that lead to the airport and surrounding areas will begin once the airports expansion plans are finalized by all relevant government agencies.

• HCMC authorities plan to widen Hoang Hoa Tham and Than Nhan Trung streets to four lanes each, and the 18E Road will be widened to six lanes.

• The city is considering developing overpasses to connect Hoang Van Thi Park with the Chao Lua Soccer Field and Terminal 2 with Phan Thuc Duyen Street.
